Hijabi Obsession: Flowy Skirts

20121204-231724.jpg

I have devoted a lot of posts to beauty, but I have some fashion news for my hijabi fashionistas!

High waisted skirts are still very much in style this season.

Pictured above is Chris Benz’ Rhoda skirt for Anthropologie.

Chris Benz is doing a capsule collection for Anthropologie! It is in his typical colorful style with lots of big bows. Eeeeeek I am so excited, but his price point may be a tad steep even for his lower priced collection.

So for you bargain hijabi fashionistas, I will post a high waisted skirt more in your budget range. I just loved the cut and color of this one so much I just had to post it.

Plus, it’s a new collaboration and I just love all of the new ones so far so I wanted to highlight yet another brilliant one.

What is your favorite collaboration?

Savvy Hijabi: Deal of the Day

Like most Muslim moms, I love a good bargain. So I decided to start doing mini posts that feature a deal of the day. Today, I wanted to showcase a pretty metallic scarf you can wear as a hijab for under $10 from Forever 21!!! They come in a mint green, gold, or ice blue.

Make sure to pick one up today if you like a little sparkle and a great deal!

Peplum Trend: A Hijabi’s Best Friend

I hope my American readers had a good holiday with their families inshallah! I know I had loads of fun with my Hubster and chubster.

Since Thanksgiving is over now, I am sure a lot of American hijabis are trying to find ways to hide the post turkey bellies. I know I am!

Luckily, one of the biggest carry over trends from past seasons is the peplum trend. At first, it looks a bit scary. Who really wants EXTRA fabric around the mid section?

But, if you really think about it, wearing a peplum top is a nice way to hide a belly but still look trim since it highlights the waist. It helps elongate the silhouette as well. If you want a polished, elegant, ladylike look, this is the trend for you.

As you can tell from the outfit I styled above, you can actually mix a few trends at once. I mixed the black and white trend with stripes and the peplum trend. Try some of them out next time you want to dress up. Wear the top with a long skirt. With the skirt above, you will need to wear black leggings. I would pair this with black wedge shoes to funk it up but you can use any pair of your favorite black shoes. Finish with a bright hijab if you are bold, or go safe with a black or white hijab.

Target’s Neiman Marcus Holiday Collection = Accessible Designer Accessories!

This winter season is bringing lots of goodies for hijabi fashionistas! Target is doing a Holiday collection with Neiman Marcus to bring accessible items designed by high end designers such as Tory Burch, DVF, Marchesa and others.

I picked my favorite accessories from the entire collection. You can never go wrong with accessories. It is a quick and easy way to make a whole outfit look fresh without having to buy new clothes altogether.

With this collection, you can actually splurge on a designer piece without feeling guilty. I plan to use my savings to donate to charities.

Since I promised myself to start packing my lunch for work, I think the Tory Burch bag will help give me the little push I needed to start doing it!

These and other pieces will be available starting Dec 1, so make sure to hit up your local Target before they are all gone! What is your favorite piece?

Hijabi Obsession: Vests

As a curvy hijabi, I feel it is important to cover the chest area. I typically do this with a combination of cardigans, my hijab, and jackets. But I am getting tired of the same old hijabi fashion tricks. Thankfully, there has been a flood of fashion offerings in the form of vests. Vests are a versatile way to update your wardrobe without having to do a major closet makeover. I am currently loving this new fur vest from Banana Republic’s Anna Karenina capsule collection. It is a nice clever way to keep warm and cover the chest area.

I would pair this vest either with a longer top (to cover your assets in the back!) or with a maxi dress or skirt.

What are your thoughts on vests? Do you love them or hate them? Do you think they are a good option for hijabis?

Hijabi Style Inspiration: Animal Prints

Jumah mubarak my lovelies! I hope that this Friday finds you all in good health and spirits iA. On a side note, I am planning to write about what is going on in Gaza, but it is turning into a long research driven based post that will take some time. So please know, that current events are very much on my mind. In the meantime, I will share another one of my hijabi fashion tips with you.

Animal prints have always been one of those things that I used to hate. It used to conjure up images of older women covered from head to toe in clashing prints (or older women who wanted to appear alluring…think Blanche from Golden Girls). So in my mind, wearing an animal print was something I avoided at all costs because I didn’t want to age myself prematurely. However, with younger more beautiful celebrities toting the look (think Gwen Stefani), I have noticed the trend picking up with the younger hijabi fashionista set. So in an effort to try something new, I am wearing a cheetah print hijab today! As you can tell by the Pinterest image above, wearing an animal print can be very striking, so this is not for the faint of heart!

If animal prints still scare you, take baby steps. Try wearing it as an accessory first. For example, a purse with an animal print, bangle, headband, or even a belt are a nice way to mix things up. If you are feeling a little more bold, try a skirt or shirt in a nice print. For the truly courageous, an animal print hijab is the way to go! I went all out because I saw my girlfriend Bahry rocking this look and I LOVED it. I just had to try it. That is the great thing about having stylish friends. They inspire you to go out of your own comfort zone. So Bahry, this post is for you girlfriend!

How do you wear your animal prints? Let me know and I may feature you in a follow up blog post!

New Hijab Obsession: Yellow

Image

Cassidy Skirt by Tory Burch

As I admitted before, I was in a hijabi fashion rut where I tended to wear a lot of black (it’s slimming!), brown, and gray. When I did venture into color territory, I stuck with pastels for a very long time. This season, I have been embracing bolder, brighter, colors. Even with brights, I stuck with the universally flattering shades of cobalt blue, hot pink, and scarlet red.

Then, I read a blog post by the video blogger Amena from Pearl Daisy. and I loved what she wore! She looked so chic but still elegant. So taking some inspiration from her, I bought a lemon yellow cashmere sweater from Uniqlo. I wear it a LOT more than I thought I would. It is my new favorite thing to wear!

The other amazing thing about wearing the color yellow is that it really does seem to make me more optimistic. Since it is such a bright and happy color, you can’t help but smile as you step out of your home to begin your day. Another added perk is that wearing yellow seems to make other people smile too. I know my daughter loves it when I wear yellow and tries to feed me bananas in order to show me that she thinks I look like one of her favorite foods. It’s very sweet.

Today, I am surrounding myself with yellow and it really is uplifting my mood. I am wearing my sunny sweater, eating my favorite fruit (pineapple that my father in law brought for me) and feeling very thankful for the people who bring sunshine into my world.

Bring some sunshine in to your own by embracing my new favorite hijabi obsession: yellow!

Fashion Tips For Hijabis With Curves

Image

As a hijabi, it can be challenging in general to figure out what to wear. Now imagine adding curves to that equation. As a curvy hijabi, I always feel an additional pressure to ensure that what I am wearing is modest, but doesn’t look like a potato sack either. I love all of my sisters in Islam, but it drives me crazy to see only smaller framed hijabis featured in Islamic magazines, sites or Instagram! Curvy ladies can be fashionable too!

Well curvy hijabis, there is help! Here are my tips for making sure we stay modest, but still embrace the fashionistas that we are.

Embrace Color: As a woman with curves, it can be tempting to drape ourselves in either black or gray. Ladies, don’t do it! One of the coolest visual tricks we have is to color block. Use a bright color to highlight a nicer feature. Wear a colorful printed hijab, wear a nice bright belt, or wear brights on the lower half of the body.

Belt It In: Before the haram police descend, it is possible to belt loose clothes tastefully without cinching it too tight that you can’t breathe. Wearing a belt helps curvier hijabis deflect looking like a blob by adding some definition.

Go Long: Hijabis with curves should embrace trends like tunic tops, longer blazers, or dress shirts. It helps cover certain areas that may be too appealing to show off outside our homes!

Always Start With A Good Foundation: Wearing items like a long sleeved turtleneck layered underneath a top with a low cut front can ensure that no “whoopsie” moments happen. I wear a high necked long sleeved top underneath all my maxi dresses, under my cardigans, and under anything that may expose skin. Also, for special occasions, wearing body shapers helps to eliminate any unsightly bulges. I personally use Spanx for special events.

Love Yourself: All hijabis should love who they are. If you are a slender hijabi, mashallah! If you are a curvier hijabi, make peace with yourself. Know that all hijabis are beautiful in the sight of Allah (swt). Let me know if these tips help you. Add some of your own if you have them. Know that I love you all.

Must Have Ruffle Jacket

20121112-171416.jpg Xhilaration Ruffle Jacket from Target

Now that winter is fast approaching, hijabi fashionistas have to bundle up! As a Muslim mom, I try to save where I can so that my little baby can get the best items she needs. That means I look for decent fashion finds that are great deals. One of my favorite places to go is Target. They have on trend fashion pieces for way less than the original designer pieces go for.

Ever since I saw Kate Middleton (yes my Anglophile crush) wearing a ruffled Burberry trench coat, I have been meaning to pick up a ruffled jacket. But for some reason, I could not find any this fall season!

Finally, I was strolling through Target and I found this! It was on sale for $35, but I think even at its regular price of $39.99, it’s a steal compared to the Burberry trench I am obsessed with.

I have to warn you to try it on until you find a size that fits since this is a juniors’ line of clothing so they run small! I had to go up two sizes from my normal size!

Now that the weather is getting colder, it’s perfect to keep me warm, but looking like a posh mom! What steals have you found so far?
