Nancy Hoque is a trailblazer looking to empower hijabis worldwide with her brand Sixteenrscarves.

When I first started wearing hijab in 1994 in New York City, I have to say we did not have any options for hijabis other than a plain black triangle hijab. It was a very challenging time for a hijabi to have any sense of style, let alone think about hijab style or hijab fashion as a stand alone concept. I remember having to make the trek from Queens to Brooklyn to even find a hijab that had any color in it or wait until the Muslim Day Parade came around in the late spring. I am so glad that times have changed and we have wonderful designers who have taken the time from their lives to help enhance the wardrobes of hijabis every where!

One such designer is Nancy Hoque, the whiz behind the hijab brand Sixteenrscarves. If you are a hijabi who doesn’t follow the pack (but which hijabi really does?) then this is the brand for you. Her designs are artistic, yet very wearable. Considering the ethnic mix here in the Bay Area, I can see a hijabi hipster totally rocking a scarf from her brand in the Mission right here in San Francisco. I got to meet with Nancy and ask her a few questions to get to know the woman behind the brand. She is just a lovely woman mashallah and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us lucky hijabis next. Here is my interview with Nancy. Read on for more about the brand, how she got her start as a designer, and what every hijabi should have:

1) What does the name sixteenrscarves stand for?
I used to live on the corner of 16th and R street in Washington DC. Thats where sixteenR came from.

2) How did you get into design and modest fashion?
When I started wearing a headscarf and even before that, I always tried to dress modest and have it look cool at the same time. I’ve always been into the arts, sketching almost everyday, painting, creating crafts. I would flip through fashion magazines and be inspired by the different ways women can dress. Of course the way Muslim women approach dressing is very different from how we see dressing presented in the mainstream fashion world. That aspect of this “under ground” modest fashion movement which has been underway with Muslim women the last 5 years is what inspired me to start designing and create sixteenR.

3) What is the most important piece of advice about design that you have received?
Knowing what type of material you use for a scarf is really important. Whether or not it is easy to wrap or not.

4) If you could collaborate with any designer who would it be and why?
This is a really hard question because I love too many designers! I would collaborate with Prada, because I love their creativity on how they present their clothes. They look into the past and take certain design elements, but their designs end up looking into the future. I also love Diane Von Furstenburg. Her story and stance on feminism is very inspiring and would totally be awesome to work with.

5) What are your top 3 essentials that every hijabi should own?
1. Under scarf. Either a headband or inner scarf.
2. A hair band to tie the hair.
3. A lot of self-confidence

6) If you could dress anyone, who would it be and why? (could be someone who is not alive)
I would love to do a photoshoot with Yuna Zarai and style her. I would also love to dress Ibtihaj Muhammad or Nour Tagouri.

7) What part of our faith that inspires you the most?
The part where it teaches you to be confident with your faith despite what others may think or say. The part that encourages to connect with your Muslim sisters and be a part of the community and to contribute.

8) You’re not only a fabulous designer, but a mom too. How do you balance work and family?be
Time management and going to bed really late. 🙂 My family supports me and gives me time to work. Otherwise it would be impossible to do. I am blessed allhumdulilah.

9) What is one thing your fans may not know about you?
I’ve lived in 5 different cities, in 3 different states, in 2 different countries the last 5 years.

10) What beauty product do you swear by?
Black pencil eyeliner.

The Importance Of Taking It Slow

20130330-232929.jpg

Salaams my lovelies! I hope you are having a great weekend inshallah. Some of you may have even had a long weekend thanks to Good Friday.

It’s been a crazy hectic few weeks in terms of traveling for work for not only myself, but my Hubster too.

So we thought we would take a day to explore some place that wasn’t too far but was just far enough that we could feel like we got a little mini vacation in.

We went to Monterey and Pacific Grove in California. Not only did we feel refreshed, we felt rejuvenated on the inside as well. We spend so much time on screens (laptops, iPads, iPhones, etc), that we forget the beauty of Allah (swt)’s creation. In Surah 13, Ayah 3, Allah (swt) says:

And it is He who spread out the earth, and set thereon mountains standing firm and (flowing) rivers: and fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two: He draweth the night as a veil o’er the Day. Behold, verily in these things there are signs for those who consider!

Here I was witnessing the beauty of sea cliffs carpeting with wildflowers before me today and wondering how we are have become numb in our daily lives. I am very guilty of not looking at the beauty of nature more and making dhikr or dua as I do so.

We need to take it slow sometimes. It will make us better spouses, parents and Muslims. We can’t do everything! No one expects us to either. Sometimes we are our own worst multitasking enemy. So remember to take it slow and realize that you may think you are doing nothing, but strolling and taking in nature’s beauty and doing dhikr cleanses our hearts and rejuvenates the soul.

So if you are like me, I ask you to do yourself a favor. Unplug even for an hour and take your little ones on a nature adventure. It will be fun for the kids and you will notice how relaxing it is for you too. It is in our nature to admire things of beauty and worship our Lord. So this will help you do both.

Try it and let me know what you think inshallah. 🙂

Hijabi Obsession: Ombré

20130301-204326.jpg

I know that deep down inside I am a New Yorker (I love head to toe black) but ever since I moved to California, I have been embracing more colors into my wardrobe.

The sunny warm weather year round here makes it hard to wear black comfortably! So you can imagine that I rock a lot of lightweight layers when I get dressed every day.

One trend I am currently rocking is the ombré hijab. It makes it easy to rock different shades of the same color because the shades are all in the hijab! Perfect for busy moms like me who don’t have time to color coordinate all the time.

And yes, since its sunny here I love wearing a hat on top of my hijab. If there was a non dorky hijab with a brim attached, I would so rock it. Protecting your face and eyes are a must ladies (it helps you look younger too haha).

Try the ombré look and tell me what you think. It’s everywhere now. Head to H&M and pick one up now to try!

Marriage Tips for the Muslim Husband

20130219-222652.jpg
It’s been a while since I wrote a post about life as a married hijabi.

I wanted to write about love in Islam because I feel like its an important topic in every time and age.

In particular, I wanted to write about love between a Muslim husband and his wife.

Now, I want to warn you that I am not a marriage counselor or an expert in relationships, but I wanted to share with you some important gems from a Muslim wife’s perspective:

1) Your wife loves you: Sometimes Muslim men forget that their wives want the best for them. While it may seem like your wife is nagging you, your wife is trying to look out for you.

She wants you to succeed. For example, if your wife is trying to wake you up, it’s not that she doesn’t want you to sleep in, but she may be trying to make sure you don’t miss fajr or miss a good portion of your day. So next time you think your wife is nagging, think about what she is focusing on and why it seems to be important.

2) Your wife wants to be heard: A lot of wives notice this. Your wife is trying to relay an important story and the you are just nodding along but it turns out you had earbuds in and you were jamming to music (or nasheeds or Quran). If your wife is talking, try to make eye contact and really listen.

3) Your wife covers for you: If you see your wife is working hard with your kids, working hard outside, or even inside your home, try to appreciate that. She is covering all your bases and errands so that you can have a moment to get closer to Allah, relax, etc.

4) Never underestimate a nice break: It doesn’t matter what type of wife you have. If she is a woman, she will appreciate you even more for giving HER a break. For example, give her a break from the kids so she can spend some time with her friends, or plan a nice weekend getaway. I promise you those little acts of kindness go a long way.

If you can’t give her a break, at least try to appreciate your wife. Some wives love books. Others love chocolates. For us, I adore fresh cut flowers. So when my Hubster wants to make me feel appreciated, he brings me some flowers. It definitely helps make my day and I in turn try to spoil him too.

I hope these tips help. Let me know what you think!

Meet the Brand: Inayah Collection

Inayah

Inayah

Jumah mubarak! I hope that you are well on this beautiful Friday inshallah.

Are you looking for a modern yet modest clothing? I used to struggle with trying to find hijab friendly clothes. Now, I feel like even walking into a large chain like Forever 21, there are countless options for hijabis. However, it still takes effort to layer some of those pieces from mainstream chain stores in order to look modest. It also is harder for curvy hijabis to layer too. I find that lots of cute outfit options for our slender hijabi fashionistas just ends up making me look bulky! The good news for hijabis who (a) hate layering too much and (b) look bulky with layers, is that there are more and more hijab brand houses cropping up. One of the beautiful things about the internet is that hijab brands that may be located in other countries are now easily accessible! I am always excited to not only support my fellow Muslims, but it is also nice to be able to shop in the comfort of my own home. I love to do it while sipping chai in my pajamas and my baby is asleep.

One of the more established brands is Inayah Collection. They have a great selection of not only hijabs and abayas, but also options like maxi skirts, pants, and tops. They even sell cute hijab pins! The one thing I really like about this brand is that their clothes are lightweight and have graceful drapes. Drapes flatter any figure! For slender hijabis, it adds some volume and for curvy hijabis, it hides some of the lumps and bumps. If you have not heard of Inayah Collection, please check them out! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Hijabi Trend Alert: Shoes With Bows

Jimmy Choo Blush Bow Tie Pump

Jimmy Choo Blush Bow Tie Pump

Happy Wednesday Hijabi Life readers! Today is all about a shoe trend I am so happy to see: shoes with bows. I love girly details like ruffles and bows because it reminds me of playing dress up when I was younger. While recent trends have been a bit more tough chic (think spikes and studs), I think this trend is a nicer more translatable one for hijabis who like to keep things simple. Jimmy Choo is making a big push on shoes with bows for spring, but I can imagine that fast fashion retailers like Zara and H&M will catch up with their own more affordable version of the shoes with bows trend.

What do you think? Would you rock this look with your hijabi style? I know I would definitely rock a flats version of this. I simply can’t do heels as a mommy of a very active toddler! I admire all mommies who can do heels because it is definitely not easy!

PS: Jimmy Choo wants to see what your Instagram pictures of shoes with bows look like. Make sure to use the #bow hashtag.

The Grace in Gratitude

20130203-224018.jpg

I am finishing off my birthday weekend (after eating way too much cake…yes my sugar fast has ended and I think I need to get back on it) and I am laying in a comfortable bed with my little babykin to warm me. I feel content and grateful to God.

Gratitude is something we all talk about trying to have, but why is that? It is most likely because when you are grateful about the people and things in your life, then you are happy. That is the real secret to happiness. Trust me, happiness doesn’t come from money, being insanely beautiful, or having a number of material things.

In fact, if that were the case, I think most super models would never have a divorce, rich people would never get depressed, and self help writers would definitely be out of a job because the rest of us would be a lost cause.

As I gain more experience in life, I realize that a lot of my own happiness comes from being thankful. Thankful to Allah (swt) for a roof over my head, food to eat, my family, and my amazing friends. When I think about those suffering in a multitude of countries, I feel guilty for even doubting my luck for a second.

So if you feel stressed, bitter, or upset, ask yourself if you have counted your blessings. That is the trick. Count your own blessings instead of someone else’s. Try it and let me know how you feel.

Friday Fun: Candy Inspired Makeup

Estee Lauder Pastel Polishes

Estee Lauder Pastel Polishes

I am lucky enough to live in the Bay area of California, so our winters are pretty mild. That being said, I am tired of chilly weather and I want spring to come! One ways I have been battling the winter blahs is by trying to infuse candy colored pastels in to my wardrobe mix. Try rocking mint green jeans with your sweater or a nice cotton candy pink hijab with your neutrals. Another great way to welcome spring a little early is by rocking some amazing new candy colored makeup trends.

I personally love rocking different nail polish colors. I have rocked anything from greige (gray/beige) to black. Right now, you can find periwinkle gracing my toes and cantaloupe on my finger tips. You can even try pastel eyeliner! Try placing some on top of basic black for eyes that really pop. I guarantee it will make your day just a little brighter.
